Join Us in the Citywide Celebrations of Mexico's Bicentennial Aniversary!
Y Que Viva Mexico!

Mexico is celebrating both the 200th anniversary of its Independence and 100th anniversary of its Revolution. The entire year has been proclaimed by President Felipe Calderón as "Año de la Patria," or "Year of the Nation." 15 September 1810 is the day of the "Grito de Dolores" or Miguel Hidalgo's call to take up arms against Spanish colonial government. The start of the Mexican Revolution is celebrated 20 November 1910, when Francisco "Pancho" Villa and Pascual Orozco led the first insurrectionist attack. Events and other promotions of these celebrations are designed to the linking Mexico's identity and historic continuity. During a speech at the inauguration of the Casa de Allende (Allende's House) Historic Museum, Felipe Calderón called upon Mexico to use the upcoming anniversaries to reflect on where the country has been and to think about what kind of Mexico descendents will inherit in the future. He said the vision of the insurgents of the War of Independence was forward, not backward, so every celebration of these past events must consider the future as well.

Austin and Mexico join in celebrating milestones in history
By State Representative Eddie Rodriguez

Throughout 2010, Austin will join Mexico in commemorating two significant milestones in Mexico’s history: the Bicentennial of the 1810 Independence of Mexico and the Centennial of the Mexican Revolution of 1910. These two anniversaries are being celebrated through a series of events here in Central Texas. I would like to personally thank the Consul General of Mexico in Austin for providing this opportunity for the Austin community to share in these historical celebrations and to learn more about Mexican history.
"In order to better understand the present and future, one must look to the past. Although Mexico has a vastly diverse culture, its people are united in these celebrations. It is a privilege to have Austin join us with much enthusiasm this 2010, when we celebrate 200 years of proudly being Mexican," said Rosalba Ojeda, Consul General of Mexico in Austin.
Upcoming events include:
•September 11 - Symposium: "Mexico’s Wars in Texas: Independence and Revolution"
•September 13 - "Sabores Autenticos de México" Gala
•September 14 - Film series Independence and Revolution: Classic Films about the Mexican Revolution
•September 15 - Mexico Independence Bicentennial Commemoration -

SOCIAL & COMMUNITY EVENTS

Austin Artist painting and photo artwork exhibition at La Peña Downtown Art Gallery, La Peña was host of an exhibition reception party for David de Lara’s "Dessonance", a collection of paintings and photo based artwork exhibition . For the past decade David has created portraits and figurative work of women. The women in his paintings and drawings are usually not based on anyone in particular and are used like dolls to symbolize the human condition. The images of the women he photographs are often distorted digitally or by hand to blur the line between the reality  and surrealism of life. You may view more of De Lara’s art work  ww.lostdreams.org or  visit www.lapena-austin.org for more art exhibits info La Peña Gallery.
